The leopard, the panther and the tiger are among the boldest images in jewellery. They carry the wild grace of the big cat – calm, confident and ready to leap.
The panther that changed jewellery
In 1914 the French house of Cartier first used the panther motif. Later Jeanne Toussaint, the brand’s long-time creative director, turned the big cat into its emblem – so strongly that she herself was nicknamed “the Panther”. The feline motif has never gone out of fashion since.
Symbolism
In many cultures the big cat is a guardian and a sign of power. It is believed to:
- give strength, courage and self-confidence;
- protect from danger and ill intentions;
- stand for independence and inner freedom;
- bring elegance and sensuality.
The leopard in jewellery
A leopard or tiger head looks equally good in men’s bracelets of onyx and natural stones and in women’s earrings and rings with crystals. It is a jewel for someone with character – a gift that says “I believe in your strength”.
