The bow is one of the most feminine motifs in jewellery. It recalls a beautifully wrapped gift and something tied with care – which is why it always brings a sense of celebration.
From the French court to today
In the 17th century bow-shaped brooches became fashionable at the French court. One style still bears the name of the Marquise de Sévigné – the “Sévigné bow”. In the Rococo era bows adorned necklaces, earrings and bodices, and in the 20th century they returned as an elegant touch to the evening dress.
Symbolism
A tied bow is seen as a sign of connection and promise. Traditionally it symbolises:
- love and friendship that bind two people;
- the gift and the joy it brings;
- femininity, tenderness and grace;
- a promise that is kept.
The bow in jewellery
The bow looks lovely in brooches, earrings and necklaces – with crystals for a formal occasion or in a clean form for every day. A bow jewel is a fitting gift for a birthday, a holiday or simply as a sign of care.
