Dragonfly

Dragonfly

The dragonfly is one of the oldest insects on Earth – its ancestors were flying over 300 million years ago, long before the dinosaurs. With its four transparent wings shimmering in the sun, it is a symbol of lightness, light and freedom.

A child of water and wind

The dragonfly begins its life under water and only after years comes to the surface, opens its wings and flies away. That is why in many cultures it is a symbol of change, growth and new beginnings – of the courage to leave the old behind and take flight.

In different cultures

  • In Japan the dragonfly is a symbol of courage, strength and victory – samurai placed it on their helmets and weapons.
  • In China it brings harmony and lightness.
  • In European folk tales forest fairies flew on the backs of dragonflies.
  • The dragonfly also embodies family love and hope.

Living in the moment

As an adult insect the dragonfly lives only a short time – so it also symbolises the ability to enjoy the present moment.

The dragonfly in jewellery

Dragonfly jewellery is light, airy and cheerful – earrings, pendants, brooches and bracelets, often with coloured crystals and enamel that echo the shimmering colours of its wings. A wonderful gift for someone starting something new.
